Three Qì Balls – Part 2

Rotating Dāntián Gong 丹田螺旋功

To start developing the Dāntián, we can practise the first three movement of Balancing Gong. We can also practise Rotating Dāntián Gong 丹田螺旋功, which is a very common movement in many Qìgōng skills. We can see it in Dayan Qìgōng’s Longevity Gong 長壽功, and it is also in Chén Style Tàijíquán 陈式太极拳. My Tàijíquán Sīfú 師父, Great Grandmaster Chén Xiǎo Wàng 陳小旺 also uses it in his warm up. It is also in Hard Qìgōng Level 3’s Iron Belly Gong 鐵肚功. So we can see that it is a very common movement and I have also seen it in other styles of Qìgōng. So what is it?

The movement involves rotating the Dāntián from a small circle to a big circle and then from a big circle back to a small circle. We start by placing both palms at the Qì Hǎi 氣海 point, men have their left hand in and ladies have their right hand in, and the other hand on top, this lines up the Láo Gōng 勞宮 points over the Qì Hǎi point. We then begin to make the circle. For men, they should start the circle at the Qi Hai point by going to the right, then up, and then to the left and then down back to Qi Hai point, so the circle is goes in a clockwise direction. Ladies go the other way, so from the Qi Hai point then from the left, the up and down, and then to the right, and then back to Qi Hai point, so the circle is anticlockwise.  This will help to strengthen the prenatal Qi.
