The Rich Merchant with Four Wives – Part 2
The Rich Merchant was very happy, finally one of his wives wanted to go with him! His fourth wife looked very normal, but she always knew what was on his mind and knew what he wanted and what he did not want. She would advise him, but he would not always listen to her advice.
The Rich Merchant prepared everything for the long journey, and when they set off his fourth wife never left his side and was always with him.
This is a Buddhist story. No matter what gender we are we will all have four wives, four husbands or four partners. In the past men dominated society and so most stories from these times have men as the main character. The Rich Merchant actually represents us, and the Rich Merchant going on a long journey means when we die.
The first wife who was very beautiful and was always with him was his body. This means when we die our bodies will not go with us they will stay behind, decay and eventually disappear.
