Yù Zhěn Guān 玉枕關

The third gate is the Yù Zhěn Guān 玉枕關, which is located on the back of he head. Yù 玉means jade, Zhěn 枕 means pillow. In the old times, pillow in China were solid and often made out of jade. So, this was the area of the head that would contact the pillow when you lay down on the bed. Yù Zhěn Guān means Jade Pillow Gate. Yù Zhěn is also a point, but in fact there are two points, and these are on the back of the head level with the two ears. When we touch these points, they make us feel more awake. In the old days in China, people liked to use hard pillows as they created more circulation. If we can handle the hard pillow, the next morning our minds will clear and more awake the next morning. Soft pillows cover so much of our head that is can block some of the circulation. This is the reason we move so much while we sleep, to keep the circulation going.

If the Qì 氣 can pass the third gate Yù Zhěn Guān it can go up to the Bǎihuì 百會 point easily. By then, all the hard parts have been passed and so the Xiǎo Zhōu Tiān 小周天 – Small Heavenly Circle can form. Then all the 12 main channels will be smooth and we will be very healthy.
