Xìng Mìng Shuāng Xiū 性命雙修 – Part 1

In Qìgōng 氣功 and Daoist training we often hear about Xìng Mìng Shuāng Xiū 性命雙修, but I am sure most of you have never heard of this, so what is it? Xìng 性 means nature, but it also relates to spirit, emotion, religion, interest, goals, relationships, direction, mind and thinking etc. All these things relate to your mind, nature and spirit and so we can say Xìng.

Mìng 命 means life. It therefore relates to the body, exercise, movement, work, doing things, playing things, physical action etc. Anything that relates to our bodies that we do or move is Mìng.

Shuāng 雙 means double and two things together.

Xiū 修 means practise or training.

Xìng Mìng Shuāng Xiū means practising the spirit and life together. In nature, everything follows Dào 道 the natural way and this tells us everything has two parts, one is Yīn 陰 and one is Yáng 陽, for example man woman, fire and water, life and death and happiness and sadness. Xìng and Mìng can be included in this one being Yīn and one being Yáng. Xìng is Yīn and Mìng is Yáng
