Five Elements People – Part 3

The Wǔxíng 五行 – Five Elements are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water. We have looked at how Wood, Fire, Metal and Water were first introduced, but where does Earth fit in? Earth is everywhere, even under the oceans. The whole Earth is connected to all the elements. Wood, Fire, Metal and Water all come from the Earth, so Earth is the centre of all the Five Elements. If we draw the day as a circle from midnight to the next midnight, we will put the Earth in the centre as the Earth is the centre of all our time. However, when we use the relationships between each element we write it as Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water, in this order and then back to Wood – this is one day finishing and another beginning. This also tells us everything goes around and around, repeating and repeating. We need to choose the right time to do the right thing, like when we are hungry, we eat, when we are thirsty, we drink, when we are tired we sleep. So we do what we are supposed to do at the right time, which is just what all animals do, follow the nature.
